BIKKEL

Contemporary Fine Art Artist: Glass, Oil Paint, Bronze and Monumental

The work of BIKKEL is autobiographical. She works in transparent layers or with transparent material, for example with glass. Curaçao is her native island and her works have Papiamentu names. Many of her works have a direct or indirect link with Curaçao. Bikkel writes poems incorporated into her oil paintings. You can find them in the marge of the paintings. In her glass objects, Bikkel mostly processes metal. This use is a metaphor for her homesickness to her native island Curaçao. About Bikkel’s glass: The spontaneous radiant colours and the whirling compositions are the special characteristics of her glass objects. The addition of metal also causes uncontrolled bubbles and very fine metal fabrics. About Bikkel’s oil paintings: The direct touch and the certainty with which fields and colours are applied, are characteristic for her oil paintings. Besides this Bikkel makes space for spontaneity and she exploits the joy that arises through the use of various materials and the reactions that consequently arise.

Review (3)
“The painter BIKKEL playfully re-interprets nautical scenes, (featuring the nude character Poseidon) injecting them with legendary figures and a spiritual significance with a masterful drip technique and multi-colored, shimmering washes to imbue the image with an aquatic sensation”

“ " There is no reason not to consider the world as one gigantic painting." Robert Rauschenberg once said. Contemporary artist Bikkel mythologizes the everyday in sweeping brushstrokes and exuberant hues. Working in oil on linen, Bikkel playfully re-interprets nautical scenes, injecting them with legendary figures and a spiritual significance. Combining figuration and abstraction, Bikkel's work provides an aesthetically unique viewpoint on contemporary life and its effect on the natural world”
